World Families Thailand Sponsorships.

World Families sponsor children in several projects in Thailand and all are channeled through Rosemary Taylor MOA and the Organisation that she started, Friends for all Children, FFAC, based in Bangkok. Rosemary Taylor, who is from Adelaide, has been involved in the organisation of fund raising for projects to assist and nurture children for over 30 years. Her initial involvement started with a single minded determination to improve the lot of orphans during and after the Vietnam war. Initially her involvement was in the organisation of adoption of these many war orphans. Since then her focus has changed slightly and she now selects and assists in the running of and fund raising for many projects in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. She insists that all sponsors of children do receive regular reports at least twice a year and that updated photographs are sent to sponsors on a regular basis. Many sponsors have been sponsoring the same child from primary school age to their late teens and have maintained a wonderful relationship over this period. Many sponsors have visited their sponsored children in their villages or their orphanages and this has been a considerable experience for both of them.

Three types of Sponsorship that WFA and FFAC fund are:

  1. Support for the Education and Development of the child who lives within a family situation. The sponsors funds are channeled towards the children in a whole community, the aim being to lift the Level of Education for the whole group. In the cases where children are unsupported the Social workers ensure that they do not remain unfunded and in these cases funds are spread as required.
  2. Support for children whose parents have died of AIDS or are suffering from AIDS. and who are in some cases themselves HIV Positive. Our support for these cildren is similar to those living in family environments and the main aim is to help these children to gain an education and become useful members of society. Some are in Institutions and our support also encompasses assistance to the institution itself. Others are living with close relations and our support is concentrated on their educational needs.
  3. Short term support of babies in crisis in Bangkok. The children in this orphanage are almost all abandoned or the children of parents who have been affected by AIDS. They remain there for usually less than a year. All are adopted to Europe and our Sponsors support provides care for these children for their short stay.

Projects in Thailand

Nong Khai

Nong Khai is situated in the arid area North East of Bangkok. This is the largest project that we are involved with in Thailand. This project involves the support of the children in their family units. These families are very poor and lead very simple lives with none of the mod cons that we think essential. The funds that we provide do not change this, they merely make some essential aspects easier and allow the children to be educated and become useful members of society. Younger children attend the local day care center, run by The Good Shepherd Sisters, and the older ones attend the local schools. The sponsors funds provide uniforms, writing equipment, school books and lunches. Lunch is provided at the day care centre and the value of the meal is enormous as it could not be provided at home. In some cases fund are provided for things that indirectly help the child’s education such as bicycles to allow the child to get to school. The primary aim of our program is to allow the children in this area to be able to go to school and to get the benefit of all that this provides. Several have gone on to Tertiary education and this is a wonderful achievement for children who would have stood no chance of this level of education without this support. The Good Shepherd Sisters run an organic farm and a pottery, both of which provide useful learning experiences and skills for the children and young adults as many now are. They also provide a small source of income for the day care centre.

Rangsit Babies Home Bangkok

Rangsit Babies home provides crisis care for children that have been orphaned or abandoned.. Most are babies and they are adopted to European countries usually within one year. All are provided with food, clothing and medical treatment. FFAC is supporting the whole organisation and is instrumental in the setting up and running of their Child Development Program. The early years of a child’s life are vitally important in it’s development and the traditional Orphanage has had little funds or personnel left over to do much more than provide the basics of life, with the hope that the child will be adopted or fostered, in which case its emotional growth child will be far better catered for. A new plan for Rangsit is for two qualified Child Development Officers to be employed to coordinate with Social Workers to plan and implement activities to foster the Child’s development. FFAC are intending to fund either one or both of these Child Development Officers.

Ayuthaya Province Wat Blangplamor School

This school is in the old capital 50 km north of Bangkok. The children sponsored all live at home and FFAC support them with the same help as in Nong Khai; School lunches, uniforms and other needs associated with school. Children come from villages around Ayuthaya and the sponsorships are administered by the school. Total number of children is 60 , with 6 staff, covering Kindergarten to Grade 6 . Recently they were donated a new building by the Monks of Wat Pakman.

Chiang Mai

FFAC have started their own sponsorship in Chiang Mai for children whose parents have died of AIDS or are HIV positive. Some of the children are themselves HIV positive. Although small, this program is expected to grow and is an area that is to be more important in the future, particularly as AIDS is very common I the region All the children live with their relations and FFAC provide financial help for them to continue their schooling. In the same way as in the other programs the children are helped with clothing and other school needs.
